The portrait is of my grand daughter Madeleine. I had spent time learning about Rembrandt’s methods and wanted to find out if I could do it too. The painting of Madeleine gave me the opportunity to find out. As you can see I placed the head against a dark background as Rembrandt often did, and then used a limited pallet of colours and the light and dark to create a sense of drama. The three quarter view of the head gives the impression of movement as if she is about to turn.
