This Painting has two titles. I began it as one of my Art History series a couple of years ago. In my Art History paintings I use images remembered from classes at Camberwell School of Art. In this case a Picasso painting called Girl before a Mirror. As I worked on the painting, using the Picasso image inserted in the remembered interior of the art school, I began covering large portions of the Picasso image with shapes and colours which were not Picasso like. Hence one of the title’s: Enveloping Darkness. At the same time I remembered that one of our teachers actually said, “Picasso is a Potboiler”. This was the 1950’s when Picasso was at a very important phenomenon in the art world. He had recently sold one painting for 160 million dollars. The teacher was probably a little jealous.
