AUTUMN 2025

 In Andrew's Blog

Greetings to all of you. I haven’t written a blog in some time because I’ve been exploring new, and I hope you’ll discover, exciting things in my paintings.

About seventy-five years ago Josef Albers began a series of paintings, which, as a group, were entitled “Homage to the Square”. He continued working on these for more than twenty-five years until his death in 1976. Around the same time as Albers began his “Squares” series, Mark Rothko began working on his classical series using squares and rectangles. Whether either of the artists was influenced by the other I don’t know. What I do know is that my new paintings are influenced by both of them.

These new paintings will be shown in my upcoming solo exhibition that will be held from 14th October to 20th October 2026. It will be at the J/M Gallery on Portobello Road in London.

My working title for the show is “Homage to the Rectangle” It’s a working title and will probably change. I’m open to suggestions.

Josef Albers believed that there is no end to colour and I agree with him. But the square, in my view, does have limits. The rectangle, on the other hand, allows endless possibilities. We are bombarded by rectangles in our urban existences. Perhaps that, in part, is the reason that Rothko’s paintings have such resonance and recognition. Without being realistic they mirror our environment.

The “rectangle” paintings are in oil paint on paper. They are much the same size as those in my last show. So don’t expect anything nearly the size of Rothko’s work. My paintings will hang perfectly on the walls of your home. Unlike Albers I choose to explore texture alongside colour. The element of a third dimension is evident even though they will be framed behind glass.

The piece I’m showing you here is as yet untitled. At the moment I call it New Series Number 7. It’s 15 x 22 inches or 38 x 56 cm. The particular colours in this piece are inspired by something that I’ll tell you about in a future post.

It is wonderful to see you so creative, just like George 91, whose latest book of poems hit the shelves in Budapest yesterday.
Lots and lots of love to you both, Mari and George
