Andrew’s Summer Blog
I met a friend at a Wimbledon Village coffee shop. Actually they do more than coffee. We were chatting about my colon cancer and I was joking around, much to their consternation. One of the things I said was that it’s a good thing that there is so much of it about because it gives the doctors more experience and expertise. He said that I should write about it in my blog. So I decided that this blog is not going to be my usual rant about art and its parlous state. This is going to be about me.
I returned in April from a lovely holiday in Sydney, visiting family, drinking excellent wine and eating excellent food. Mentally refreshed but physically tired. I thought it was simply the jet lag, but the lack of my usual energy continued longer than it had before. Here I was full of all sorts of ideas for the paintings I was going to make for my Australian exhibition in August 2016, and yet I didn’t have the energy to pick up a brush or open a tube of paint. So I went to the doctor who arranged for tests, scans etc and we eventually discovered that I had a tumour in the colon. Surgery is scheduled for 9th July.
I must say at this point that whatever you hear or read about in the press or see on TV, my experience is that the NHS is brilliant. I could not be receiving better care than I am at St Georges Hospital in Tooting.
I have been able to do some painting, though visits to the studio are short because I get tired quickly due to my anaemia.
I have an exhibition in Wimbledon coming up in September. I should be well enough by then and I’ll make sure that you get the details. Then there is the big show in August 2016 in Sydney. Again details will follow. I’m attaching an image of one of the paintings I’m working on for that show.
Please remember that this is a work in progress. It will inevitably change as more layers of paint obliterate what you see now. In fact it has changed since I took this photo. It’s 39 X 30 inches.

Good luck Andrew – I will be thinking about you. A cool post on you website: is your wife doing the worrying for you?
All the best
David
Paula has succumbed to my mood of optimism so she appears not to be worried. See you in Cambridge on 6th September.
Very best, Andrew
Brave and lovely. We are reading your blog sitting on the balcony of our little hotel in Monstein, near Davos, over a cuppa. The sun has been shining since 6am, the farmers are already in the fueled cutting hay along the steep slopes that roll down to the village and the brewery, yes, brewery in the village has already kicked into action. Look up Monsteiner beer. Their sales have rocketed since we arrived. We’ve done three long hikes already. Looking forward to the finished painting. See you over weekend. Home late Sat. A&P x
All good luck, Andrew ! I, too, praise St George’s Tooting. I had a quadruple heart bypass there last year, and can’t praise them enough.
Best wishes
Mike
Andrew. What rotten luck. Will be thinking of you on the op day on the 9 th.
And you are still pushing on with the exhibitions.
Love and admiration from Irene
I’ll look forward to seeing your exhibition in Wimbledon in September. Keep your spirits up, and enjoy some of this English sunshine. xx
Hi Andrew, I will be thinking of you on the 9th July. Excellent idea to have a blog. And what a beautiful raw painting.
Love Trisha.
HI Andrew,
We will thinking about you and wish you well.
All the best
Richard & Phyllis

All fingers will be crossed at your old primary school Andrew, for next Thursday and beyond. Good to hear good things of the maligned NHS – it’s always been good in my experience too, and we all know the importance of mind over matter. Keep them on their toes though…
Best regards
Nigel, Julie, Mary, Helen, Marcia – oh you know the rest…
Thank you all so much.
Hello Andrew: You are on the road to successful treatment of your ca. I have had other ca experiences over the past few years and have been fortunate in that I had early diagnosis and treatment both here and in Toronto. Please keep me posted. I marvel at your skills!!! It was unfortunate that our paths crossed once again in Australia. I’m settled back in Thunder Bay: 321-309 Hilldale Road, Thunder Bay, ON P7G OA2. All the best to you Andrew. Allan
Hello Andrew: My email address is awlaakkonen@gmail.com.
Andrew, sorry to hear you’ve got this bugger to deal with, but delighted to read in your note that you’re getting on with living rather than getting about living with an illness – exemplary, lovely man!
I’m about to go away for a week but when I’m back you’ll be through your procedures, and it would be great to meet up 🙂 Ax
Hi Andrew still miss seeing you and wife for our lovely chats.. Where is your Tennis painting hanging now. Wishing you all the best William
Yes the wine shop is not the same without you and without good cheese.
The tennis painting is now hanging on my living room wall.
Best, Andrew
A word of good cheer Andrew , My partner, (also ex Earth Sciences Camb – way back) had had his op. for colon cancer six months before I re-met him at a Churchill Dinner mid summer 2012. We are now happily settled at my place in SP.
He is absolutely fine now, and his annual checks since, have shown ‘all clear’.
Give my love to Paula, I can imagine very well how anxious she must be.
With Love, Marcia.
Great to hear from you Marcia

What a wonderful blog, Andrew! And your painting looks really exciting. I like the thought that there are more layers to go on to it. It will have great meaning for you…and us…
Paula has been keeping me informed . Our thoughts and love are with you in the coming weeks.
