A very hot day in a small Tuscan town. The sun is beating down and there is virtually no shade to be found. I chose a tall narrow canvas for this painting to emphasise the vertical doorways and drain pipes and even the figures. The canvas is almost twice as tall as it is wide.
I had made a drawing earlier of the foreground figure in an entirely different context and was fascinated by the negative shapes around the figure. I wanted to use her in a painting. She seems to fit very well here.
