Here I wanted to use Manet’s Olympia in an English landscape. I imagined coming across this beautiful woman while I was on an evening stroll down a country lane. The lane actually exists in East Sussex though Olympia isn’t usually to be found there.
I chose Manet’s Olympia because it’s a beautiful painting and I have admired it since I was a student at Camberwell School of Art back in the 1950s. Manet is one of the artists we studied and I include many of those Art History images, in what I call my ‘Art History’ paintings.
