Description

The story of Queens College’s Mathematical Bridge on the River Cam in Cambridge is perhaps true.

It is said that the bridge was designed and built under the direction of Sir Isaac Newton. Not one nail, screw or bolt was used in its construction. It was held up only by gravity. A number of mathematicians at Cambridge University were determined to discover how it was held together. They took it apart and couldn’t put it together again without using screws and bolts.

The painting is one third of a commission I was given to paint views of Cambridge. The other two paintings are not on the website.
