Another one of my sporting images. In this case one of my favorite spectator sports; boxing. I worked from on the spot sketches, from memories and from life drawings of figures half reclining, a difficult pose for the model. The moment when everyone knows, including the protagonist, that he is beaten. Colour was of minor importance, as was perspective. In fact the awkward angles help to convey the feeling of giddiness when you’re punched in the head. The heads of the crowd watching outside the ring, are my versions of Aboriginal rock art images in Kimberley, North Western Australia. I haven’t been there but I did see their work on display at the National Gallery of Victoria, Australia.
