Cellist

Description

I’m more drawn to smaller music groups such as trios or quartets, rather than full orchestras. Though I used to enjoy large orchestral works, I don’t nearly as much now. Mind you, I still enjoy Beethoven’s symphonies especially the ninth.

This painting was intended as a preparatory piece for a larger work and possibly a mezzotint, neither of which have happened yet. I wanted to place the cellist at the forefront of the quartet. This is, in part, because I love the sound of the instrument and because of the way the instrument looks and becomes one with the instrumentalist. Unlike most other instruments, which are held away from the body, the cellist seems to wrap himself/herself around the instrument.
